The paper gives a survey of foreign and domestic ideas and conceptions in studies of the urbanised space carried out from the late 19th to the 21st centuries. The analysis embraced the designing, R&D and theoretical-methodological activity of urban planners, geographers, sociologists and psychologists, as well as political documents influential in the development of urban structures. Attention is largely focused on works devoted to town-planning transformations and studies of the urbanised space of cities. The paper does not seek to approach the subject matter as a whole.Celem pracy jest przegląd zagranicznych i krajowych idei i koncepcji dotyczących badań nad przestrzenią zurbanizowaną realizowanych od XIX do XXI w. Analizie poddano działalność projektową, naukowo-badawczą i teoretyczno- metodologiczną urbanistów, geografów, socjologów i psychologów oraz dokumenty polityczne mające wpływ na rozwój struktur miast.
