Commemorative monuments as pawns on the white and red chessboard: political and media discourse of Monument to Brotherhood in Arms (Warsaw), Hasior's "Iron Organs" and "Monument of the Revolutionary Deed" (Rzeszow)

Abstract

Trudno powiedzieć, czy większe znaczenie ma wzniesienie pomnika ku chwale danej osoby bądź idei, czy zburzenie go. Coraz częściej takie akty to jedynie polityczne kaprysy i granie przez zmieniające się u władzy obozy polityczne "pod swój elektorat". We współczesnej Polsce pamięć i upamiętnianie są bowiem stale instrumentalizowana politycznie. Dobrze widać to na przykładzie tzw. pomników wdzięczności - monumentów stawianych tuż po zakończeniu wojny celem upamiętnienia żołnierzy Armii Czerwonej i wyrażenia (dyskusyjnej) wdzięczności. Ich dalsze losy stały się tematem licznych debat: czy powinny pozostać nienaruszone, zostać zmienione, a może zupełnie zniknąć z przestrzeni publicznej. W tekście autorka chce zaprezentować kilka z możliwych strategii postępowania z problematycznymi upamiętnieniami oraz ich polityczny i medialny dyskurs. Do analizy wybrane zostały trzy monumenty, które są lub były zlokalizowane w różnych miejscach Polski: warszawski pomnik Pomnik Braterstwa Broni ("Czterech śpiących"), "Organy" Hasiora z przełęczy Snozka (Gorce/Pieniny) oraz rzeszowski Pomnik Czynu Rewolucyjnego. Metafora pionków na biało-czerwonej szachownicy to nie tylko nawiązanie do polskich barw narodowych, ale także próba zobrazowania dynamiki związanej z tymi pomnikami: protestów, kampanii, kontr-upamiętnień czy politycznej presji. Pod uwagę brane będą także relacje architektoniczne, kontekst socjokulturowy oraz dawne i obecne znaczenie tych pomników.It’s difficult to decide what is of more significance: raising or overthrowing a monument dedicated to a person or an idea? Both decisions are first of all political and are as pragmatic as the politics itself. In modern Poland the notion of memory is often being exploited. There are dozens of "monuments of gratitude" built shortly after the Second World War to commemorate the Red Army’s soldiers and to express questionable gratitude to the Soviet Union. This gives politicians plenty of room to have their saying on the remnants of the Communist era: let them rest as they are, modify them or destroy completely in the name of patriotism. In the following text the author wants to present potential strategies of dealing with dubious pieces of architecture that may bring back disturbing memories of historical trauma on the basis of three Polish monuments from Warsaw, Pieniny Mountains and Rzeszów – the latter being my main case study. Why the pawns and the white and red chessboard metaphor? Not only because these are the colours of the flag of Poland, but also due to the social dynamics of the subject i.e. protests, international campaign to protect socialist era monuments (#thanksRzeszow) or the pressure from the new right-wing government to remove them.
