Histochemical studies of keratohyalin in human epidermis

Abstract

1. We confirmed the observation that KG contain ribonucleic acid by using methyl greenpyrenin staining.2. The metachromasia of the KG with the Giemsa stain and their blue staining by the Ritter-Oleson method suggest that these structures also contain acid mucopolysaccharides, as indicated by the chemical data reported by Flesch et al (5).3, In view of our findings in normal and psoriatic human skin with the Barnett-Seligman and Chévromont-Frédéric methods, it appears that the Gram-positivity of KG and of the barrier layer is not due to their - SH content.4. It seems probable thai KG contains also lipids. According to recent observations (15), the possibility exists that hexosamine complexes show some degree of osmiophili
