Manuskripte können in Deutsch oder Englisch abgefaßt sein und sind in drei Exemplaren einzureichen. Der Text sollte in Kapitel mit Zwischen-überschriften unterteilt und anderthalbzeilig geschrieben sein. Illustrationen und Tabellen sind in kopiergerechter Form beizufügen. Die Anmerkungen erscheinen durch-numeriert am Ende des Manuskripts. Künftige Autoren können ein Merkblatt (style sheet) mit Vorschlägen zur äußeren Form bei der Schriftleitung abrufen. Bei den übersandten Manuskripten gehen wir davon aus, daß der Autor die Textstellen anderer erkennbar zitiert, beigefügte Bilder und Illustrationen selbst erstellt hat (Urheberrecht) oder die Quellen angibt, damit von der Schriftleitung die Genehmigung zur Reproduktion eingeholt werden kann. Bitte beachten Sie die Beilagen in diesem Heft. positiven Falle - motivierendes Rückmeldeinstru-ment sind, muß diese Veränderung mit Behutsam-keit vorgenommen werden. Insgesamt sind die bisherigen Ergebnisse meines Versuchs - sowohl hinsichtlich der Leistungen, als auch hinsichtlich der Arbeitsatmosphäre - sehr er-mutigend. Ich empfehle deshalb allen Kolleginnen und Kollegen, die an einer arbeitsintensiven, freund-lichen Atmosphäre im Klassenzimmer und damit an besseren Lernerfolgen ihrer Schülerinnen und Schü-ler interessiert sind — und wer ist das nicht? - ähnli-che Wege zu gehen. Für den Tageslichtprojektor: Zu unserer Folienbeilage Friederike Klippel "The Keys" Teaching ideas for the transparency The six pictures on the transparency accompanying this issue present us with a simple story: Two girls meet at the bus stop (see picture No. 1), from where they go to their music lessons. On the pavement outside the music school they find a bunch of keys (picture No. 2). They argue about what they should do with them, because it is late, and their music lessons will start in five minutes' time (picture No. 3 ) . One of the girls runs off, the other enters the school building (picture N o . 4 ) . The short-haired girl is seen handing in the keys to a clerk at the Lost Property Office (picture No. 5 ) . When she gets back to the music school the teacher seems to be very angry with her (picture No. 6) . Two pictures are deliberately kept ambiguous: In picture N o . 3 it is not made clear whether the two girls agree that one of them should take the keys to the Lost Property Office and leave the other one to explain the Situation to their teacher or whether they part in disagreement and' each of them acts in the way that she considers right. Similarly, the last pic-ture does not show the reason for the music teacher's anger. It may be just because the girl is late, but it could also be the fact, that the girl accidentally found the keys which the music teacher had lost and will not be able to claim that day. This ambiguity makes the transparency suitable for advanced learners, but it can equally be used with beginners. For the latter the transparency can pro-vide a framework for practising tenses or writing simple dialogues. Here are five suggestions for teach-ing with the transparency. 1 Story writing (beginners) On the board the following words are given as a skeleton for the story: met, bus s t o p , f o u n d , keys, t i m e , r a n , gave, l a t e , a n g r y . The story is then de-veloped orally with the whole class before the pupils are asked to write it down. They may add some simple dialogue to flesh out their stories. 2 Class story (intermediate) The class is divided into 5 groups and each group is given a paper copy of one of the pictures of the transparency. Picture N o . 4 is not handed out be-cause it does not show a Situation which demands dialogue. Each group has to write a few lines of dialogue for their picture. Then the transparency is shown on the overhead projector and the groups read out their dialogues in turn. Obviously there will be discrepancies in the dialogues since the pupils only knew what was in their own picture. The pupils talk about their different ideas of the story and then agree on a common Version. They review or adapt their pieces of dialogue accordingly. 7 3 Jigsaw guessing (intermediate) The teacher Covers up all the pictures of the transpar-ency with pieces of paper except for one, e. g. No. 4. The pupils speculate about what is happening in the picture, what coulcl have happened before, and about what might happen next. When one picture has been exhausted as a topic it is covered up again and a new one revealed. A Suggestion for the se-quence of showing the pictures is: N o . 4 , N o . 3 , N o . 5 , N o . 2, N o . 1, No . 6; but you can, of course, show them in a completely different order. 4 Different Solutions The transparency is shown with picture N o . 6 blank-ed out. The Störy is worked out orally with the class. They are then asked to think of different endings to the story. Here are a few ideas to stimulate their imagination: The music teacher is so glad that her keys, which she has lost that day, have been found, that she gives the girl a big reward; the music teacher is very angry that the girl missed part of the lesson, because they are rehearsing for a concert; the long-haired girl had told the teacher that her friend had gone to buy herseif something to eat, she does not believe the story of the keys. 5 Role play The transparency is shown, a simple class version of the story is worked out and written up on the board. Then the pupils are asked to work together with a partner in order to write one or two dialogues for the story which they then act out for the others. The best dialogues are chosen and a dramatized version of the story rehearsed as a short sketch for a parents' meeting, a school fete for something similar. Apart from these teaching suggestions which make use of the whole transparency, individual pictures may be used to practise certain language points. Pictures Nos.2 and 3 can lead to work with aux-iliaries: we c o u l d , we s h o u l d , we m i g h t , we m u s t n ' t etc. The scene in the Lost Property Office may stimu-late descriptions of different objects or reports of the learners' personal experience with finding or losing things.
