Manuskripte können in Deutsch oder Englisch abgefaßt sein und sind in drei Exemplaren einzureichen. Der Text sollte in Kapitel mit Zwischen-überschriften unterteilt und anderthalbzeilig geschrieben sein. Illustrationen und Tabellen sind in kopiergerechter Form beizufügen. Die Anmerkungen erscheinen durch-numeriert am Ende des Manuskripts. Künftige Autoren können ein Merkblatt (style sheet) mit Vorschlägen zur äußeren Form bei der Schriftleitung abrufen. This k i n d of transparency rarely lends itself to other Ianguage activities. Hovv-95 ever, using transparencies in class can be very motivat ing for the pupils , especially if the trans-parencies are not just replicas of pictures and exer-cises f rom the textbook. The transparency in this issue of E N G L I S C H is a multi-purpose picture which can initiate a wide var-iety of language activities. This type of picture, ap-propriately called W i m m e l b i l d in German, is k n o w n to the pupils f r o m magazines, advertisements or their ch i ldhood picture books. Since a lot o f things are happening in this k ind of picture, one does not get bored so quickly when it is used more than once. There is something new to discover each time. Be-cause the picture is not tailored for a specific gram-matical problem it can be used at all levels of foreign language learning. A t an elementary stage the exer-cises are very simple, at an advanced level the ac-tivities may be quite complex and linguistically de-manding. The transparency can thus be used as a filier activity for all classes and groups. The activities suggested are by no means an exhaustive Programme for a picture of this k i n d , but they should stimulate the teachers' methodological inventiveness to f ind more uses for pictures they encounter in their dai ly lives. Activity 1: Looking through the hole F o r this exercise you need a piece of w r i t i n g paper, preferably A 3 size, into which you cut or tear a hole about the size of a 1 D M coin . This sheet of paper is used as a mask for the transparency; you put it on top of the transparency before you switch on the overhead projector. Y o u then place the hole on those things in the picture that you want your pupils to see. W h i l e y o u move the hole from one object to the next you should lift the piece of paper slightly so that the picture is more obscured or turn the projector out of focus; in this way your pupils only see what y o u want them to see. The purpose of this exercise is to get the learners to speculate about the Contents of the picture. If y o u show them the falcon and the animals in the picture they might guess that it is a zoo. Y o u could select either rather similar or wi ld ly different things in the picture to show through the hole, depending on the k i n d of impression you want to create. Y o u r pupils may make some notes about their guesses or discuss them in class immediately. Y o u could also ask them what eise they expect to be in the picture and make a list of their suggestions on the board to be later compared w i t h the transparency. Activity 2: Similar words The transparency is shown without the mask. The pupils have to find as many words as possible that are very similar (in pronunciation or spelling) in English and G e r m a n . Here are a few examples: museum, palm tree, sea, giraffe, toilet, baby, tourist, w a l k m a n , zigzag, mouse, in format ion , canoe, paddle, cat, spear, T-shirt , volcano. This may lead to serious etymological study of a few selected words , or it can be taken as the starting point in a lesson about English words in the German language today. O n a much more elementary level pupils can be asked to write d o w n as many words (nouns, verbs, prepositions etc.) from the picture as possible that begin with the same letter, or have the same number of letters. Activity 3: Kim's game The transparency is shown for exactly two minutes, while nobody is al lowed to do any w r i t i n g . After the projector has been switched off the pupils are asked to write d o w n as many things as they remember about the picture. This basic game pattern may be varied according to the level and the interests of the class in question: special attention may be given to the people and what they are doing , groups of learners may be assigned to different aspects of the picture etc. Y o u can prepare worksheets wi th lots of actions listed (the ones in the transparency and a few more) and let the pupils mark those that they remember as being in the picture. If the collating of information in the second phase is done in pair w o r k , there is usually quite a bit of spontaneous arguing and talking. Y o u might like to let groups or teams compete wi th each other in this game. Activity 4: Ten minutes later This activity works better if your pupils k n o w the transparency from one of the other exercises. They have to imagine what this room in the museum w o u l d be like ten minutes later. For obvious reasons this exercise practises the present perfect and present continuous tenses (e. g. 7 t h i n k t h e y o u n g m a n is s t i l l l i s t e n i n g t o bis w a l k m a n t e n m i n u t e s l a t e r .
