The introduction gives a general information on the country, the current state of the art and prospects for the development, both for the natural environment and resources as well as for the population and structure of settlements and infrastructure. It presents the theoretical grounds of sustainable and polycentric development. It critically presents international recommendations and guidance (the United Nations and the European Union) for a sustainable and polycentric development and the objectives of spatial development of the EU. It explores the importance of the regional organization to ensure a balanced spatial development of the country and adds a critical review of previous research on regionalization. The central part of the thesis sets up a model for the polycentric development of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will offer a balanced spatial development of the country and facilitate the integration of the country into the European integration processes. The author notes that for a balanced spatial development a creation of a network of regional centers that will provide a uniform access to all activities to all residents is needed. The conclusion states the priority tasks that the State of Bosnia and Herzegovina must implement in order to achieve a balanced spatial development and thereby create the conditions for integration into the European Union
