Abstract    This thesis is based on the new development of Green Nanochemistry to synthesize, functionalize and explore the potential applications of engineered metal oxide nanoparticles (EMONs). The preparation of EMONs with desired sizes, coatings and properties was precisely controlled by Nanochemistry approaches; at the same time the concepts of Green Chemistry were applied in the whole process to reduce raw materials, energy, hazard, risk, cost and waste.   By applying the principle of Green Nanochemistry, SnO2 quantum dots (QDs) and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with different coatings have been successfully prepared. Their potential applications have also been studied. SnO2 QDs with a narrow size distribution (4.3 ± 0.7 nm) were achieved by directly decomposition of SnIV(OtBu)4 precursor in an ionic liquid ([BMIM]BF4) under microwave irradiation. The microwave-assisted method especially combined with ionic liquid exhibited high efficiency, which led to the formation of highly crystalline SnO2 QDs within a minute. Due to the surface adsorption of the ionic liquid, the prepared SnO2 QDs could be redispersed in water, and sequentially the suspension was used as an ink for ink-jet printing applications. A gas sensor was fabricated by ink-jet printing of SnO2 QDs ink over an electrode on a silicon clip. The printed sensor showed a fast response and a high selectivity toward ethanol compared to other gases such as CH4, NH3 and CO. These results implied that the water-based transparent SnO2 QDs suspension has a promising application potential for directly writing gas sensors and other semiconductor devices. Fe3O4 nanoparticles were also prepared under microwave irradiation by decomposition of [FeIII(OtBu)3]2 precursor in tetraethylene glycol (TEG). Ultra-small superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (SPIONs) were synthesized using natural products of vitamin C (VC), green tea solution (GT) and green tea extracts, respectively. In the syntheses, these natural products acted as reducing agent and their oxidized products further played a role as surfactant; therefore, the synthesis and the functionalization of SPIONs were integrated in a one-pot reaction. Due to the strong capping effect and hydrophilic properties of these natural oxidized products, the prepared SPIONs showed excellent water redispersibility and colloidal stability, which are pre-request for further biological applications. The use of these natural antioxidants in the syntheses also favored the formation of safer SPIONs for biomedicine applications.  The applications of these water-soluble and biocompatible SPIONs as MRI contrast agents and cell labeling agents have also been explored. The SPIONs showed promising results for T2-weighted imaging (negative contrast) applications. DHAA-Fe3O4 NPs showed strong labeling effects for NIH 3T3 cells. Furthermore, DHAA-Fe3O4 NPs water suspension was also used as an ink for ink-jet printing applications. The printed sensor exhibited good sensitivity to CH3CH2OH, NH3, CH4 and NO2 and high selectivity of CH3CH2OH. The in vivo MRI tests of these SPIONs are currently being carried out. The use of plant polyphenol to synthesis and functionalize SPIONs was extended by using dopamine and caffeic acid, which is proposed to be a general green-nanochemical approach for preparing water-soluble and biocompatible magnetite nanoparticles.              Kurzzusammenfassung    Die vorliegende Arbeit basiert auf der Weiterentwicklung von Green Nanochemistry, um funktionelle Nanopartikel aus Metalloxiden (EMONs) herzustellen, sowie diese zu modifizieren und ihr Anwendungspotential zu erforschen. Die Herstellung dieser EMONs mit einer gewünschten Größe, Funktionalisierung sowie Eigenschaften wurde genauestens durch die Anwendung von Nanochemistry kontrolliert. Zur selben Zeit wurde in dem gesamten Prozess Green Chemistry betrieben, um den Anteil an Rohmaterialen, Energie, Gefährdungspotential, Risiken, Kosten und Abfall zu reduzieren.    Durch die Prinzipien der Green Nanochemistry wurden SnO2 Quantum dots (QDs) und Fe3O4 Nanopartikel (NPs) mit verschiedenen Funktionalisierungen erfolgreich hergestellt, sowie ihr Anwendungspotential untersucht.     SnO2 QDs mit einer hohen Monodispersität (4,3 ± 0,7 nm) wurden durch direkte Umsetzung des SnIV(OtBu)4 Precursors mit einer ionischen Flüssigkeit ([BMIM]BF4) unter Mikrowellenbestrahlung hergestellt. Die Mikrowellensynthese, vor allem in Kombination mit ionischen Flüssigkeiten, weist eine hohe Effizienz auf, was zu einer hohen Kristallinität der SnO2 QDs in einer Reaktionszeit von unter einer Minute führte. Aufgrund der Oberflächenabsorption der ionischen Flüssigkeit sind die so hergestellten SnO2 QDs wasserlöslich. Somit kann aus ihnen Tinte hergestellt werden, welche dann Anwendung im Ink-Jet-Printing findet. So wurde z.B. ein Gassensor hergestellt, bei dem eine Elektrode auf einen Silikonchip gedruckt wurde. Dieser Sensor zeigte eine schnelle Resonanz und eine große Selektivität gegenüber Ethanol im Vergleich mit anderen Gasen wie CH4, NH3 oder CO. Diese Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass diese wässrigen transparenten SnO2 QDs-Suspensionen ein vielversprechendes Anwendungspotential haben, um mit ihnen Gassensoren oder andere Halbleiterbausteine direkt zu bedrucken. Die Darstellung der Fe3O4 NP erfolgte durch Umsetzung des [FeIII(OtBu)3]2 Precursors in Tetraethylenglykol (TEG) ebenfalls mit Hilfe von Mikrowellenbestrahlung.    Ultrakleine superparamagnetische Fe3O4 NP (SPIONs) wurden durch Umsetzung mit entweder Vitamin C (VC), einer Lösung aus grünem Tee (GT) oder den grünen Tee Extrakten hergestellt.   In diesen Synthesen reagierten die Naturprodukte sowohl als Reduktionsmittel, als auch deren Oxidationsprodukte als oberflächenaktive Substanz. So konnte die Herstellung und Funktionalisierung der SPIONs in einer Ein-Topf-Methode durchgeführt werden. Die so hergestellten SPIONs zeigten eine exzellente Wasserlöslichkeit und kolloidale Stabilität, hervorgerufen durch die hydrophilen Eigenschaften des Oberflächenreagenzes; damit eignen sie sich für weitere biologische Anwendungen.   Eine Synthese unter Verwendung dieser natürlichen Antioxidantien begünstigt zudem die Bildung von sicheren SPIONs, welche dann Einsatz in der Biomedizin finden können. Zudem wurde der Gebrauch der wasserlöslichen und biokompatiblen SPIONs als MRI Kontrastmittel und Zellkulturmittel untersucht.    Die SPIONs zeigten vielversprechende Ergebnisse als T2-gewichtete Bildgebungsanwendungen (negativer Kontrast). DHAA-Fe3O4 NPs zeigten starke Markierungseffekte für NIH 3T3 Zellen.   Die mit DHAA-Fe3O4 NPs hergestellten wässrigen Lösungen wurden als Tinte im Ink-Jet-Printer verwendet. Der so gedruckte Sensor zeigte eine Empfindlichkeit  gegenüber CH3CH2OH, NH3, CH4 und NO2, zudem eine große Selektivität mit Ethanol.   Gegenwärtig werden in vivo MRI Tests mit den SPIONs durchgeführt.    Die Herstellung und Funktionalisierung der SPIONs mit Pflanzenpolyphenolen werden um Dopamin und Koffeinsäure erweitert, da diese einen Zugewinn in der Green Chemistry versprechen, um wasserlösliche und biokompatible magnetische Nanopartikel herzustellen.
