Falconer Department of Rural Economics Mimeograph Bulletin No. 121 Ohio State University and Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station Columbus, Ohio Septambor 1939 ESTDIATED GROSS CASH INCOME FROM THE SALE OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS FROM THE FARM, AND FRClvl AGRICULTURAL ADJUSTMENT Ar.tvliNISTRATION PAYMENTS FOR OHIO FARMS, BY COUNTIES - 1938 This bulletin presents the estimated gross cash income from the sale of agricultural commodities and from government payments from Ohio farms, by counties for 1938. Similar estimates have been made for 1927; 1929; 1930 and l931J 1932J 1933, 1934 and 1935; and for 1936 and 1937; the results of which are found in Mimeograph Bulletins No. 22, No. 27, No. 48, No. 60, No. 93, and No. 114 of the Department of Rural Economics, Ohio State University and the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station. This year, for the first time, all income figures are calculated for the calendar year. In previous studies crops WBre calculated on a crop year basis while livestock income was based on the calendar year. Some changes have been made in the method of calculation for certain products due to changes and discontinuation of previous sources. Certain ita.ms may not be completely compurable with figures for previous years. Although the completeness and reliability of certain information is slightly questionable, nevor·bheless a fair picture of the sources of agricultural income is givon by this study. As time goes on and new source data become available a greater degree of accuracy will be attained in this study both us to tota.l income and the per cent to be allocated to each individual product. In this study, gross cash income is usod to denote the actual tota.l income to farms in u county from tho sa.le of any agricultura.l commodity. Thoro arc a few exceptions, especially in the case of corn and the other feed crops. A large amount of these crops are sold to other fa.rms in the same county. Sa.los to neighboring farms in tho s~e county have not been included in this study as sales for that county. The data heroin do not indicate the relative importance of the various enterprises, but rather their importance as sources of income through sales. Tho datu used as a busis for this study wore secured from tho United States Department of A~riculturo, Agricultural Marketing Servioo; census publications; information compiled by tho Dopartm<mt of Rural Economics, Ohio State University; and tho best judgment und opinion of exports in tho soverul agricultural enterprises. All agricultural products have boon included in this study with u fowminor ontorprisos, such us horses, honey and wnx, and flowers, excepted. Those items uro not a very largo part of tho income in any county. At present luck of dutu makes it impossible to set up a reliable method of estimating thu income from these products. As pointed out a.bove, tho data given hero do not indicate the totul value of agricultural production. It is only tho ~aunt received for that portion of the production which was sold. Tho value of that portion consumed on the farm ns feed, seed, or for home use has not been included. Neither does it include the other sources of incame 2. of farmers such as income from outside work, or interest on outside investment. This study does contain payments :ma.de to farmers for pa.rticipo.tion in Agricultural Adjustment programs. Those po.yments nro not payments, tha.t is po.yments m.a.de to farmers for participation a.fter county expenses have been pa.id. Perhaps a. brief expla.na.tion is necessary stating what hao boon included under some of the eutorprisa headings. Under the handing 11 lll.iry" has boon included tho income from tho salo of do.iry products, voo.l calves a.nd cull dairy cows, while under the hooding "Cattle" has been included tho income from the sa.lo of a.ny cattle for moo.t purposes except venl calves and cull dairy cows. It should be noted tha.t the cost of feeder cattle purchased has not been deducted from oa.ttlo sa.les • The heo.ding 11Poul try" has been taken to mea.n the income from. both eggs o.nd poultry menta, while "Shoop" includes wool a.nd mutton. "Truck" includes those vegeto.blos grown for sale outside of greenhouses, excluding potatoes which were estimAted separately. The counties have been listed in nine groups for ea.se of' com-paring counties which ho.ve essontia.lly tho snme typo of agriculture. When arranged o.lphnbotically, Allen follows Adwms County, but scarcely any one would be interested in comparing the two, since they nre in nearly opposite corners of the Sta.te, and follow quite different types of agriculture. The group nwnes refer to the position of tho counties within the Sta.te. Owing to the fact that there is such a groa.t vo.riation in tho size of' counties, the toto.l gross ca.sh income is unsatisfactory o.s a. mea.ns of comparing two counties. For that reason it was thought advisable to calculate tho gross ca.sh income per fa.rm and per aero. The total gross income wa.s divided by tho number of' norcs of all land in farms a.nd by tho number of farms as given by tho 1935 census to secure tho above va.luos. It should bo noted that tho low income per aero wo.s largely due ~o tho f~ct that tho acreage designated in the oensus a.s "all lo.nd in farms" includes oonsidorablo areas of land not actually under cultivation and some not even used for po.sturo. Table I shows the number Of counties in which an enterprise r~nked from first to sixth·as a source of income. Table II gives, by counties for the year 1938, tho gross cash income from tho sale of farm products, tho six leading sources of income arranged in order of im-portance and tho relative importance of each enterprise expressed as a peroenta.go of tota.l income from so.los. To.ble III shows government payments, income from.so.les, tota.l income and average total income per farm and per acre. TABLE I.
