BUCHER, M.E. 1Each year the American Institute of ElectricalEngineers awards the Edison medal to the personin the field of electricity who has shown himselfmost worthy. Theaward was foundedby friends of Thos.A. Edison and isgiven by a commit-tee of twenty-fourmembers of theAmerican Instituteof Electrical Engi-neers. Among thosewho have receivedthe medal are Rob-ert Millikan, Benja-min Lamme (OhioState '88), MichaelPupin, Alexander G.Bell, George West-inghouse, and Nico-la Tesla.Professor CharlesF. Scott, who wonthe medal this year,is the son of Dr.William H. Scott, the third president of Ohio StateUniversity. Professor Scott graduated fromOhio State in 1885.Professor Scott started working for the West-inghouse Co. on a night shift, watching the bear-ings on a shaft to see that they did not get too hot.For this he received $30 a month. Soon after thishe was promoted to assistant to Nicola Tesla whowas working on the commercial production of theinduction motor. After working two years in theresearch department he became known as one ofthe very able designers of A. C. apparatus inthis country.Scott had been experimenting with A. C. motorsof about fifty horse power during the year 1890.In 1891 he designed a 100 h.p. motor, to be runon single phase current, for a company in Colo-rado.At this time Edison's lamp was about twelveyears old. Transformers for converting A. C.current into D. C. had been in use about five years.The first single-phase lighting plants had been inuse about three years. These used 1,100 volts at133 cycles, so we see what Professor Scott had asmaterial to work with.In 1892 the Thompson Houston Co. brought outa complete line of two-phase installations. In1893 the Chicago exposition was lighted by two-phase alternators of 750 k.w. rating. During thissame year the General Electric Co. announced athree-phase system and again during this yearMr. Scott designed his two-phase, three-phaseconnection transformers.In 1891 Professor Scott became assistant elec-trician; in 1897 he became chief electrician. In1904 he was made consulting engineer, which posi-tion he now holds. In 1911 he accepted the pro-fessorship of electrical engineering at Yale, andon January 29, 1930, he received the Edisonaward.APRIL, 1930
