法隆寺金堂火災後の科学的処置について

Abstract

1) The scorched timbers inside the Main Hall were treated with compound urea resin (Ultral), by soaking them with the resin to prevent the carbonized part from falling off. 2) Fragments of the wall-paintings evidently adjoining one another in shape or picture were cemented together with urea resin. 3) The intermediate layer between the surface plaster wash and the inner mud coating, or the portion including much of susa (rice-straw bits mixed in clay for better stay of mud) and liable to come off owing to the carbonized susa, was cemented and reinforced with urea resin to prevent it from separating the two layers. 4) Acryl resin was used to prevent the pigments of wall-paintings from scaling off. 5) The walls themselves were enclosed in frames of special device, and removed from the building to a platform for further treatment. 6) The walls were scraped on the back sides to remove the top layer. The mud layer thus exposed was reinforced with urea rezin (Izumilac), and P. C. P. was applied on wooden portions in the walls. 7) In the reinforced walls were embedded many bolts of stainless steel, with which were connected checker-work of bars of similar material. Over the checker work were affixed channels as long as the height of the walls. The bolts and nuts were connected by electric welding. 8) The walls thus reinforced on the back sides were enclosed in frames of stainless steel, curved in accordance with the entasis of the pillars. The joints of the frames were welded. 9) The scorched wooden doors of the Main Hall were planed on the scorched surface. Each two doors were stuck together with urea adhesive (Igetaleim), so that four complete doors were made out of the eight scorched doors
