Abstract

La pianola representà un autèntic fenomen de masses durant les tres primeres dècades del segle passat. La seva història ens proporciona un interessant relat sobre el naixement de les grans indústries musicals, els inicis de la difusió massiva de música o el canvi de paradigma que suposa disposar, per primera vegada, de la música desitjada en el moment escollit. El present article parteix d'una breu contextualització històrica i tecnològica per abordar, tot seguit, el fenomen de la pianola a Catalunya a partir d'unes fonts que, malgrat el seu alt interès, han estat molt poc explotades. Lluny de presentar una anàlisi quantitativa i sistemàtica sobre aquests materials, l'objectiu d'aquest article és mostrar el potencial del rotlle de pianola com a testimoni del nostre passat, tant des de la perspectiva estrictament sonora com des de la vessant sociocultural que se'n pot desprendre.The player piano represented a true mass phenomenon during the first three decades of the last century. Its story gives us some interesting information about the birth of the great music industries, the beginnings of the massive distribution of music and the paradigm shift related to the capacity of choosing the desired music in the desired moment. This article starts with a brief historical and technological contextualization to address immediately the study of the player piano phenomenon in Catalonia from some documentary sources that, despite their high interest, have not been widely exploited. Far from presenting a systematic and quantitative analysis of these materials, the aim of this article is to show the potential of the player piano roll as a witness of our past, both from the musical and social perspective
