Discrepant d?hipòtesis recents, l?autor defensa les explicacions tradicionals: gerret conté el sufix ?ITTU, formador de diminutius (i no pas ?ETUM), i el mot xucla o sucla prové de xuclar o suclar ?absorbir?; es tenen en compte les denominacions occitanes gerlet, jarret i juscle, així com el sinònim caramel del castellà meridional.Etymological and lexical study of the icthyonyms gerret ?Spicara smaris? and xucla ?Spicara maena?.
