During blanking, tear drainage through lacrimal duct into thenose occurs. Under normal conditions, the mucosa of lacrimal sac is highly resistant toinfection. However, sac infection known as acute lacrimal duct infection may developdue to nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Acute form of this disease is presented asinflammation of lacrimal sac with burning and erythema of overlying tissues andlacrimal abscess can be seen in more than 20o/o of cases. The aim of this study isidentification of common tacteria causing nasolacrimal duct infection anddetermination of their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles in children with congenitalnasolacrimal duct obstruction.Methods: This study was performed on 61 patients (on average one-year-old) withcongenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction referred to Isfahan university affiliated"Fayyaz" terttary eye care center in 1396. Identification of specimens was done usingphenotypic and genotypic methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of identifiedisolates was determined by disk diffusion method.Results: All of 6t isolates from culture of specimens belonged to gram positive cocci.Staphylococcus epidermidis was the predominant species (n:51, 83%) followed byStaphylococcus aureus (r=5, 8.1Yo), Staphylococcus haemolyicus (n: 2, 3.2Yo) andeach of Staphylococcus saprophyticas, Staphylococcus hominis and Streptococcuspneumoniae (n:\, l-6%). Totally, highest resistance was found against erlhromycinand tetracycline while vancomycin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin and imipenemshowed the highest susceptibility.Conclusion: finding of this study represent the prevalent bacterial species involved innasolacrimal duct infection in Isfahan and provide information of about theirantimicrobial resistance profiles.
