For corrosion test, four specimens (240,320, 400 and 600) according to their surfaceroughness were tested with sodium chloride (NaC!)by salt spray testing for 82 hours. Corrosion studywas identified by specimen weight gain for 20hours and 82 hours. From the results, it showedthat the corrosion was increased on the roughsurface compared with the smooth surface. Fromthe result of XRD, it showed that Mg playimportant role to form corrosion product of spinel(MgAI20 4).Keywords: corrosion, composite, XRD1 IntToduction2 Experimental ProcedureThe composite AJ 2009/SiC whisker wassupplied by Advanced Composite MaterialsCorporation (ACMC), USA The composite wasfabricated by powder metallurgy technique. The corrosion product wasdetermined by XRD Philip3 Results and DiscussionFigure I shows the qualitative composite samplediffraction pattern indicating the presence ofaluminium as the matrix, magnesium as analloying element whereas SiC is thereinforcement.Aluminium matrix composites (AlvIC) aie currentlybeing developed for engineering componentsbecause of high stiffness, elevat.ed temperatureproperties and good fatigue resistance [I].However, the limitation of AMC applications isconcern about t.he effect of t.he reinforcement oncorrosion resistance. Previous corrosion studies onAMC have shown various mechanisms such ashigh dislocation density around the reinforcement,voids at the interface between mat.rix andreinforcement [I], oxidised layer on thereinforcement [2] and segregation ,.tf alloyingelements to the interface between matrix andreinforcement [3, A]. The objective of this paper isto show the corrosion behaviour of composite AJ2009 reinforced with SiC whiskers when testedthrough the salt spray for 20 and 82 hours.238'J"."!
