This is due to insufficient sources and,lack of land, skill or education which can help ensure a good life. Poverty affectsboth the female heads and their children. This study att~mpts to identify the~-.socio-economic well-being of households headed by females in NorthwesternMalaysia. Three research sites were chosen for the study: Northeast District ofPenang to represent the urban area, Seberang Perai Tengah to represent theurban fringe and Baling, Kedah to represent the rural area. A combination ofquantitative and qualitative methods were used in the data collection, whichinvolved the use of questionnaires on 353 respondents, in-depth interviews with30 informants and the participation-observation method in workshops andcourses attended by female heads. This study <:;oncludes that the majority of thefemale heads in Northwestern Malaysia is poor and has similar characteristicswith those in other countries. Many of them, however, show the determination toenhance and improve their well-being. The majority work hard and aspire toprovide their children with a better life. Even though they receive moral andfinancial support from f~mily and friends, government and non-governmentagencies remain the most important source of support to many women. In spiteof this, the limited amount of financial aid given and the inaccessibility to trainingcenters have resulted in the aids becoming inefficient in improving the socio-economic condition of households headed by females.11
