Coevolution of mankind and microorganisms

Abstract

Tisućama godina ljudi i njihovi preci obolijevali su od raznih bolesti – infektivnih, uzrokovanih patogenima poput bakterija, virusa i parazita, te kroničnih i degenerativnih, uzrokovanih starenjem organizma. Tijekom čitavog tog razdoblja ljudi su se genetski i fiziološki mijenjali, usvajali su nove navike stanovanja, prehrane, higijene, što je predstavljalo prepreku, ali i izazov za mikroorganizme. Evolucija čovjeka je još od razdoblja hominida paralelna s evolucijom mikroorganizama, a danas je riječ o globalnom procesu koji se zbiva brže nego ikada prije.For thousands of years humans and their ancestors suffered from all kinds of diseases – infectious, caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and parasites, and chronic and degenerative, caused by our own bodies as they age. During all this time humans have genetically and physcially changed, they constantly created new ways of living, eating and hygiene. All of this represented not only an obstacle for microorganisms, but also a challenge to be overcome. Evolution of mankind has been parallel to the evolution of microorganisms since the time of hominids. Today that is a global process, which happens faster than ever before
