Abstract
In September 1975, Jakarta Governor Ali Sadikin
issued an order that the eleven newly-built luxury houses
in Condet East Jakarta had to be demolished to preserve the
originality of the Betawenese community in this area. The
reason for the order was partly to satisfy the Betawenese
community in Jakarta, which criticised the policy of the
Jakarta Administration, that suburbanisation of the fringe
area of Jakarta had caused the Betawenese to be driven out.
It is questionable whether the Governor's order
will satisfy the Betawenese, since it does not solve the
fundamental problems faced by their community.
This thesis attempts to present a comprehensive
picture of the fundamental problems which led the Betawenese
to protest against the policy of suburbanisation of the
fringe area of Jakarta
