This is a study of immigrants from the Fiorina
district of Greek Macedonia who have become orchardists
in an irrigated , closely settled area of northern Victoria
in Australia. Its purpose is to analyze the assimilation
process among agricultural settlers but the details
used to illustrate assimilation (or the absence of i t )
serve also as an account of the problems and adjustment of
first generation Macedo-Slav settlers , about whom little has
been written. The thesis divides readily into two parts:
the first three chapters presenting background information
and the rest analyzing assimilation
