This article discusses the use of health indicators for decision-making in the management of the SUS (united system of health). Discussing concepts of services and concepts of indicators, it speaks of indicators and evaluation of health services, and on those used in the scope of the SUS. As methodological procedure of this research, consultations were made on the health plans in two cities of Santa Catarina, prepared for the period of a municipal management, from 2005 to 2008, chosen randomly. The goal of this research is show that, although there are health indicators, institutionalized within the SUS, this indicators are not used to support the management of the SUS. Such indicators could serve to point a several of strategies and points of intervention that would facilitate the management of services. Finally, the research emphasizes the importance of knowledge management its contribution in the use and exploitation of indicators to support the management of the SUS
