Tuttle, Jr., Ph.D.                          Asbury Theological Seminary Tuesday, 2-4:40 p.m. -------------------------------------------------------------  I.  COURSE DESCRIPTION  Throughout the history of the church there have been (either within or alongside the mainline Church) movements of the Spirit that have sought to maintain balance between the church's organizational structure and its spirituality.  The history and theology of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movements demonstrate how the person and work of the Holy Spirit have been at the heart of church renewal in nearly every generation of the Church’s history.  After a thorough description of the powerful precedent set in the Scripture and in the apostolic churches to follow, this course will trace an unbroken line of Spirit-filled renewal movements down to the present day.   II.  GENERAL GOALS      A.  To provide an understanding of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movements from a historical perspective.  B.  To ground the student in the theology that empowers the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movements in specific and renewal movements in general.   C.  To create a vision for what the Spirit of God is doing in renewal presently and provide a platform for discussion as to how one might access that Spirit/renewal for our own churches today.  III. Sept. 20:   The History and Theology as Established in the Early Church.  A. Signs and Wonders. B. The End Times.  2 One page critique due.  Sept. 27:   The Apostolic Precedent:  A. Its Growth.  B. Its basic characteristics: 1. Emphasizing certain aspects of the Spirit’s work.  2. An involvement in a new age . 3. Mass conversions. 4. A tendency toward sectarianism.  Oct. 4:   The History and Theology as Revealed in Continuing Movements of the Spirit:  A. The Early Ecumenical Councils and Creeds. B. The Didiche. C. Montanism. D. The Jehoachim Movement. E. Three one page critiques (two from the required texts and one from the collateral reading). B. Completion of 1200 pp. reading (400 from the required texts and 800 pp. from the collateral reading). C. A take-home final exam which will focus upon interpreting the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movements in light of a particular ecclesiastical tradition (preferably your own, 4-6 pp.). D. Be able to activate clearly the biblical evidence for a theology of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movements.   B.  Have an acquaintance with the major movements of the Spirit throughout church history that culminate in the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movements.   C.  Realize how different church traditions are a part of the stream of the Spirit's renewal since Pentecost.   D.  Be able to interpret the strengths of these Movements of the Spirit in a way that is consistent with their own ecclesiastical tradition.   E.  Be exposed to a reasonable range of literature related to the subject.
