Tim will be with us all day on Friday and I will be teaching the remainder of his material and leading discussions on Saturday.   REQUIREMENTS:  I. Leadership and Self Deception: Getting Out of the Box from the Arbinger Institute     Also recommended as supplemental readings for the class are Tim Elmore’s books Habitudes I and Habitudes II. These and other books will be available for purchase at the seminar or if you would like to discover more about Tim, his books, and his ministry search his website at growingleaders.com    II.  Summative paper (10-12 pages for folks taking the class for one hour credit and 20-24 pages for those taking the class for two hours credit) that ties together seminar presentations and discussions with readings for the class.  The summative paper can be proportioned however you would like, but it should address the following three questions.      A. Develop a strategy for creating a leadership culture. Although it is possible to complete this assignment hypothetically, the application for such a strategy will necessarily need to become contextually sensitive and specific. Therefore, it may work best for you to assume a ministry that you are currently a part of, or have previously been involved with. Drawing from the material in this seminar, discuss what changes you foresee need to be made and how you would go about facilitating those changes. Identify potential barriers to those changes and the principles that would be essential to see the change toward a culture of leadership come about.  B. Choose five of the habitudes that seemed to best resonate with a need in your life, in the ministry that you are currently involved in, or in a situation/relationship that you are currently aware of.  State how the habitude relates to this particular situation, what insight it provides, and what change it calls for to better the situation! C. From the other text(s) that were read, provide an abbreviated book review stating what you regard as the author’s primary reason for writing this book, what they say about the particular position they espouse, and offering your critical response to their position. As a result of reading this text what were you caused to conclude?      Summative paper is due by January 24. See Dr. Kiesling if this deadline creates a problem for you. Turn in the paper with an addressed envelop returnable to you through the SPO, or to another address if you are leaving campus.

You should have received an earlier e-mail outlining preliminary readings and a brief assignment to be turned in to my office by Friday at noon. The following should coincide with that e-mail.    REQUIREMENTS:  I.   Attendance at all meetings of the seminar, Friday and Saturday.   II. If at all possible a 2-3 page response to the following questions to be turned in to my office (FM 108) by Friday noon:   Describe a pivotal crisis of faith experience in your life.  What  precipitated the crisis?  What were the issues?  What did you do in the  midst of it and how did you feel?  Describe the factors and people who were  helpful to you in bringing resolution.  Were there factors or people that  were not helpful?   How did they help or not help?  Who were you before the  crisis and who are you now?  What convictions/concerns/ideals/opinions/etc.  did you emerge with on the other side?   Who are some of the pivotal people and communities who have helped  shape your faith and your life vision so far?  What rose did they each play  in your life and how did they impact you?  What parts of them have you  assimilated?    III. Readings  There are four chapters that will be placed on electronic reserve for you to read and a choice of three other selections from books on my reserve shelf in the library for you to choose a couple of chapters from. Do all you can to have the electronic reserve chapters and the four chapters from Richard Mouw’s book (available in the bookstore) read prior to the seminar. If time does not permit this, try at least to read the top two chapters listed below and then move to the chapters from Mouw, before getting into the reserve shelf items. IV. Written Work (to be completed after the seminar and turned in by noon on Thursday, January 29.   Your response to three integration questions are required designed to be 3-5 pages each in length: (Note: the response to these questions may overlap, but were originally designed to pull from different readings. We will discuss at the seminar how to approach these assignments.)  A. Using the concepts discussed in your electronic reserve readings and the Mouw chapters as springboards, design a year-long plan for spiritual formation programming that takes into account the developmental issues of young adults and that engages resources from across the whole campus.   OR Design a 4 year chapel “curriculum” (broad outlines and goals) that balances critical thinking with affective/experiential elements, that is developmentally appropriate for young adults, and that reflects a concern for diversity and racial justice. OR Design a small group program for a campus of 2000 students that honors the faculty’s concern for sound exegesis and historical-critical method without compromising student ownership and leadership of the groups.  Give particular attention to the selection, training, and supervision of leaders.  B. Compare and contrast the leadership principles set forth in Coleman's Master Plan of Evangelism with those in Coleman’s Master Plan of Discipleship.  Include (counts as one of the pages) an 8 ½ x 11 appendix summarizing your findings that you could use as a teaching handout.  C.  Based on the text Acts 19:8-10, create a ministry plan for launching a two year "School of Tyrannus" in a potential/future ministry setting.  Use the Strategic Planning Process Wordoc Template to illustrate your plan in an 8.5 x 11" format.  Pay special attention to creating a "School" that has the potential to help an entire geographic area "hear the word of the Lord".       or Write a short scholarly paper on the nature of the "School of Tyrannus" mentioned in Acts 19:8-10, paying special attention to the factors that caused it to become so influential.  2 Unit Students  Write a 3-5 page summary on Courage & Calling, or Os Guinness’ The Call or Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret. AND, Create a “Calling Sheet” for yourself  (2 sided hardcopy 8 ½ x 11) including: 1) Your life verse(s), 2) Your purpose in life statement, 3) Your Core Callings/Passions, 4) The Roles/Responsibilities/Relationships God has given you, 5) Draw (on the back) a diagram showing and naming the most important relationships God has given you.  You are encouraged to use your own handwriting or have someone else draw for you if that makes it easier for you.  Do NOT turn in your original, …send a copy.
