The course explores the issues raised when we employ the fruits of exegetical and historical biblical study in shaping an understanding of the witness and core values of the OT seen as scripture, that is, as the critical norm and rule for Christian faith.  Three realities inform and shape our exploration of OT Theology. The first is that the OT and its theological perspectives originate from times, places far removed from any modern setting. In addition, its linguistic expression, literary genres, religious practices, and main ideas express the values of a culture distinct from our own. Thus the element of historical study of the OT strives for more than antiquarian illumination, but seeks to learn how we listen to God's word spoken in a language and accent not our own, from faces not the colors of our faces, and addressing cultural, political, and spiritual issues that diverge significantly from our own.  Second, this cultural distance does not stop with the OT. The earliest interpreters of the OT, who established its canonical shape and position in the Christian Bible came from Egypt, North Africa, Babylon, Syria, Turkey, and Asia Minor. Ignoring these voices forfeits formative insights into the OT's voice in the church. Therefore class will not be limited to the modern era, but will situate OT theology in the history of interpretation, the flow of the church’s quest to read the OT normatively, meaning that we will listen to voices from throughout the church's history.  Third, the reality of ministry shapes our approach. As we explore selected methods, insights, and examples of various attempts to read the OT normatively, we will risk a theological interpretation of select sections of the OT. Such a task must always be oriented to the question of how the OT provides norms and standards for Christian believing, worshiping, and living. Specific Objectives: We will pursue the general objectives of the course by pursuing these specific objectives, which will shape the day-to-day conduct of the class. Students successfully completing this course will be able to: 1. Describe and assess the essential stages and developments through history of the theological interpretaion of the Old Testament, making concrete reference to specific interpreters, and their exegetical efforts; 2. Describe and assess the contemporary discipline of OT Theology in terms of the original settings of the OT material, the history of its interpretation, and the problem of contemporary, normative use;  3. Biblical Resources for Ministry Contains excellent listings of other volumes dealing withe OT theology. READING:  You will read a LOT in this class! Reading exposes students to the discipline’s history and problems (Sailhammer,  selected readings), and to modern statements of the field addressing the historical dimension of the OT faith (Miller), the exegetical-theological issues (Childs) and the larger systematic theological concerns (Von Balthasar). While readings are correlated to specific topics, it is recognized that students will not always be able to read the exact assignments for each day. What is required, though is a midterm and a final reading report in which you will  indicate your completion of reading assigned to that date using a form I will provide for you. Each report is worth 25 points, for a total of 50 reading points. LECTURES are a vital component f the course. Instead of directly expounding readings, lecture will present an attempt at a synthetic overview of the core values of OT theology.  Attendance Policy: Occasional absences are an inevitable part of academic life, but attendance is vital. Attendance will be taken via a daily sign-in sheet. The professor assumes students will exercise the highest diligence and integrity in recording attendance. Thus if you miss 6 sessions, 19 points are recorded for attendance All absences count, and all may be made up, therefore no distinction between “excused” and “unexcused” will be observed.  Any absence can be made up by contacting the instructor for a reasonable, brief written assignment to be completed by the student. Request for make-up work must be made by the student either ahead of time, or within a week of the absence occurred. The make up work must be submitted within a week of the professor giving the student the make-up assignment. Completion of the make-up work will remove the absence. Typically, make-up work involves listening to an audio recording of the missed class presentation and submitting a 1-page response or reading an additional article (of reasonable length) and writing a 250 precis.  Three Essays 7-8 pages (typed/printed, double-spaced, 1” margins) will be assigned. These papers are take-home assignments, details of which will be posted on the Intranet Course Center 2 weeks prior to the due date. They are to be the students’ own individual study, thought, organization, and wording completed without assistance from others. Use of materials other than texts and class notes is not required and will, in fact, detract from the student’s own analysis. Work done for other classes or by other students is dishonest and will result in a failing grade and institutional disciplinary action.  These papers will involve direct study of biblical texts and/or significant examples of OT theological interpretation, with a view to implementing insights gained from lecture and reading. Eichrodt, Walther, The Theology of the Old Testament, 2 Vols, Westminster, 1961ff. Recommended: Bauer, David. Biblical Resources for Ministry. Revised 2nd Edition, 1995. Contains excellent listings of other volumes dealing withe OT theology. Completion of the reading constitutes 10% of the grade. While readings are correlated to specific days, it is recognized that students will not always be able to read the exact assignments Stone, OT Theology Fall 2002 Page 2 for each day. If an article is part of a particular day's reading assignment, students will find the article especially helpful and relevant for that day and would profit from having read it prior to class. What is required, though is a midterm and a final reading report in which you will  indicate your completion of reading assigned to that date as a percentage.  The final reading report will be comprehensive. The two percentages will be entered as 5% of the student’s grade respectively. Critical Interaction with Eichrodt: Students will write a 900-1000 word double-spaced critical interaction with the 2 volume Theology of the Old Testament  by Walther Eichrodt. This critical review should: 1. Illustrate how Eichrodt exemplifies the revival of biblical theology in the early decades of the 20th century by analyzing his own statements about the method to be followed, such as are found in Vol. I Chapters1-2 2. Pick a chapter from the work and walk through how Eichrodt constructs his presentation, or follow a theme throughout the work, identifying both strong points and weaknesses of the presentation. 3. Demonstrate a careful reading of both volumes 4. Show an awareness of the issues presented by Sailhammer and class lectures LECTURES are a vital component f the course. The percentage will be calculated based on 24 class sessions. Thus if you attend 19 sessions, this is 79% and will be entered in as 10% of the student’s final grade. Any absence can be made up by contacting the instructor for a reasonable, brief written assignment to be completed by the student. Sometimes a biblical passage will be presented and students will respond to a series of questions requiring some level of analysis of the passage based on knowledge gained from the course.  While the final exam will be taken in class on the scheduled final exam day, the mid-term will be a take-home test, to be taken within a continuous, uninterrupted 75 minute period. There are to be no notes, books, or consulations during the exam. Thus the element of historical study of the OT strives formore than antiquarian illumination, but seeks to learn how we listen to God's word spoken in alanguage and accent not our own, from faces not the colors of our faces, and addressing cultural,political, and spiritual issues that diverge significantly from our own. Moreover, this cultural distancedoes not stop with the OT. The earliest interpreters of the OT, who established its canonical shapeand position in the Christian Bible came from Egypt, Babylon, Syria, Turkey, and Asia Minor. Toignore the contribution of these voices would be to lose formative insights into the OT and its role inthe church. Therefore class will not be limited to the modern era, but will situate OT theology in theflow of the church’s quest to read the OT normatively, meaning that we will listen to voices fromthroughout the church's history.Second, the reality of ministry must shape our approach. As we explore selected methods, insights,and examples of various attempts to read the OT normatively, we will also attempt a theologicalinterpretation of select large sections of the OT ourselves. Such a task must always be oriented to thequestion of how the OT provides norms and standards for Christian believing, worshiping, andliving..Specific Objectives: We will pursue the general objectives of the course by pursuing these specificobjectives, which will shape the day-to-day conduct of the class. Critical Interaction with Eichrodt: Students will write a 900-1000 word double-spaced critical interaction with the 2 volume Theology of the Old Testament  by Walther Eichrodt. This critical review should: 1. Illustrate how Eichrodt exemplifies the revival of biblical theology in the early decades of the 20th century by analyzing his own statements about the method to be followed, such as are found in Vol. I Chapters1-2 2. Pick a chapter from the work and walk through how Eichrodt constructs his presentation, or follow a theme throughout the work, identifying both strong points and weaknesses of the presentation. 3. Demonstrate a careful reading of both volumes 4. Show an awareness of the issues presented by Sailhammer and class lectures LECTURES are a vital component f the course. Three Open Book/Notes Essays will be assigned, each of which will be 1000-1200 words, not counting notes, references, or bibliography. These papers will be concrete exercises in which students will work with a passage of scripture or problem of biblical interpretation posed by the instructor in the light of specific issues focused in class. Students may consult class notes and textbooks, but no other sources unless the instructions so direct, for writing these essays. These are to represent your very best thought and work. Essays are to be the student’s own work and students are asked not to consult, give, or recieve any advice in conjunction with these essays. The essay topic and instructions will be posted on the Intranet "lectures" folder 2 weeka before it is due, per Stone, OT Theology Fall 1997 Page 3 the schedule below. They will not be distributed in class. Assignments will be in the form of Microsoft Word documents, which can be read on any workstation on campus and printed out.  Essays may be submitted two ways. First, you can print it out, double-spaced, with 1" margins, and submit it on the due date by 5:00 PM, either in class, or at my office. Electronic submissions must be dated by this time by the First Class system. Comments and grade will be written on the paper and it will be returned via the SPO. Electronic submissions might be commented on the document and returned as an e-mail attachment. Second, work may be submitted electronically. At this time, I can only accept work produced on Microsoft Word, not Word Perfect, Works, or any other word processing program (Mac or Wintel is fine). If you can submit a document in MS Word, there are several advantages to you. First, submission is easier. Just attach your document to an e-mail and send it to me via your ATS FirstClass free e-mail account. Remember, I make no guarantees, nor do I accept any responsibility, for work submitted any other way.  No submissions on disk, please. A second advantage is that I will usually place my comments and grade on your paper via MS Word's "Comments" feature, which allows direct commenting on a document. I then return your paper via an E-mail attachment and you open it in MS Word and you'll see some words are highlighted. Placing your mouse pointer over the highlighted word will reveal the comment. Final Exam Session: While there is no final examination in this class, the final examination session will be used for a class presentation based on the final essay assignment. Attendance at this session is mandatory and absence from it for any reason other than illness or genuine emergency will result in a reduction of the student’s final grade by a single degree (e.g. B+>B).
