The researcher investigates how the struggle of Bounderby to get the better life, from a ditch to be a banker in Charles Dickens’ Hard Times novel, especially, viewed from individual psychological approach. The objective of the research is analyzing the personality of major character based on the individual psychological theory by identifying the personality of major character and structural elements of the novel.
In conducting this study, the researcher uses qualitative research in which the data are based on primary data of the novel Charles Dickens’ Hard Times itself. While secondary data are Charles Dickens biography and the other data which deal with the research.
In analyzing the data, she applies two approaches. First result, based on the structural analysis of each elements, it shows that the character and characterization, setting, point of view, plot, style, and theme are related to each other and form the unity into good quality of a novel. Second, based on the individual psychological approach, there is close relation between novel release and the individual personality underlying it, such as the struggle of the novel, the life on the evil of the industrialism. This novel also consists of the effects of the education system, the setup of the caste system, and the Industrial Revolution on society through this small town of Coketown
