New York:Cambridge University Press, 2005. $70.00 hardback.The purpose of this book is to examine the historical re-lationship between the rhetoric of risk and medical knowledgepertaining to AIDS. Rhetoric is meant not only to persuade anaudience that the topic of AIDS is a crucial one, but also speaksto social practices as producing knowledge. Preda mentionsthe globalization of the "AIDS risk" and how the concept of"risk" may be interpreted and communicated to the target au-dience both directly, indirectly, infected and affected. The dis-cussion of risk pattern develops the idea that "undesirable"events such as AIDS can unfold on a global level.The use of the word "rhetoric" reminds the reader thatissues of health involve political factors and indeed the case ofAIDS is one of hope, controversy and politics. It becomes ap-parent that the use of rhetoric in campaign language, the chal-lenge of defining "AIDS risks" and communicating these risksto people who may not perceive their risk is an ongoing chal-lenge. Preda is aware of the complexities of prevention efforts,particularly as it relates to the challenges of dealing with theissues of heterosexual men who engage in sexual activitieswith other men but do not identify themselves as gay. Withinthe general population and in certain cultures of the worldthis behavior is not unusual nor is it unacceptable. Preventioncomplexities are also evident when one considers the seriousimplications for the younger generation when compared tothe older generation. Efforts surrounding condom use come tomind. Condom use may have worked well with earlier genera-tions (which had direct, concrete experience of what it means tolive with HIV and AIDS), but may remain abstract and ineffec-tive in younger generations. According to the Preda, youngergenerations may not perceive condoms as viable protectionagainst AIDS.Preda's discussion was generated by reviewing medicalarticles and prominent journal research findings worldwideduring the 1980s. The four aspects of AIDS prevention he con-sidered are the social groups' self-perception, persuasion tech-niques for inducing behavioral change, the interaction betweenmedical practitioners, and the at-risk individual. These are im-160 Journal of Sociology & Social Welfareportant dimensions not to be seen in isolation from the person-environment transactional perspective. The author's approachin terms of thinking of diverse stakeholders is effective, howeverthe book goes on to create a limiting effect to keep the idea of"expert knowledge" to that of medical knowledge. AlthoughPreda limits this expert knowledge to medical knowledge, heacknowledges that the following groups bear interest in thetopic: clinical researchers, epidemiological and pharmaceuti-cal researchers, public and health policy makers, politicians,economists, ethicists, lawyers, social scientists, media persons,artists and entertainers. Preda's position weakens the supportfor rhetoric being an element of providing social knowledgeand how cultural narratives and categories of social thoughtshape scientific knowledge about epidemics.The author's goal of integrating science with socio-cultural issues to communicate about AIDS is very helpful forhealth communication campaigns. This integration will helpguide the message and assist in the development of populationspecific messaging. In an effort to expand and emphasize theimportance of integration, the formal integration of the HealthBelief Model in the discussion on perceptions of risk by com-munities would have strengthened this important point.While a historical perspective is provided, it is very im-portant to note that the author is careful and sensitive in theuse and descriptions of African Americans, Haitians and gays.He advocates the necessity to avoid reinforcing stereotypesand the stigma that are generally associated with HIV, AIDS,Haitians and gay communities. In addition, since the inquirywas conducted from a sociological perspective, it would havebeen helpful for the author in the final chapter titled, In Lieuof a Conclusion to offer specific recommendations beyond thereiterated point that rhetoric matters. A discussion on the roleof sociologists, social scientists, and the medical field in AIDSinformation, education and advocacy for social policies wouldhave been appropriate.Within the final chapter, Preda does offer useful sexualhistory assessment questions to the physician that can be ap-plicable to any direct services provider. In addition he callsfor "expert democracy" which refers to" the conditions underwhich a genuine dialogue between expert knowledge and con-Book Reviews 161cemed social groups can take place in the public sphere." Thisconcept begs the consideration and inclusion of patients andclients as experts of their own lived experiences. The author'sacknowledgement of "reflection to bring our own productiondevices to the surface" is a refreshing, needed and affirmingstance if not directive.The style in which the topic of AIDS is presented byPreda seems best suited for academicians interested in devel-oping theory and logic models for AIDS prevention, educationand advocacy. The theoretical framework of the text might beless appealing to direct service workers involved in practiceand would be more helpful to those designing the theory thatdrives practice. Rhetoric is helpful in campaigns on AIDS pre-vention, but the question remains on how to communicate ef-fectively. This book illustrates how important culture is withinprevention and health policies and with respect to how scien-tific research is organized and funded.Cudore L. SnellHoward UniversityPaul Robinson, Queer Wars: The New Gay Right and Its Critics.Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2005. $25.00hardcover.Paul Robinson's Queer Wars is the first attempt topresent and to critically analyze the rise of gay conservatismin the United States. Measuring conservatism along threeaxes: (1) politics - gay conservatives repudiate the gay move-ment's affiliation with the left; (2) gender - gay conservativesseek to rescue gays from their association with "gender de-viance" namely, from effeminate men and mannish women(although lesbians are hardly mentioned at all in any of theirwork) and finally, (3) sexual license - urging gay men in theirwriting to restrain their erotic behavior. Robinson reviews thework of four gay, privileged, white, Christian, and conserva-tive authors (Bruce Bawer; Andrew Sullivan, Michelangelo
