Objective of the course: To provide you with a working knowledge of the structure of the English sentence. We are not concerned with prescriptions for correctness in writing or speaking; we are concerned with the description of the sentence. Preparation for the class: Because we meet only 5 weeks, it is imperative that you keep up with the daily assignments. Study the text carefully and note in your Learning Log what you have learned and what you have questions about in each assignment. We will discuss these items at the beginning of each class. Work the exercises in the text. Answers may be found in the back of the text. Assessment of your work: You will have approximately 4 tests and a final exam as well as several quizzes. Points will be assigned each test in a progressive manner; i.e., each test will be awarded more points than the last one. Quizzes will be of minimal value as their purpose is to inform you of areas you need to address prior to the tests. The following scale will be applied to the total number of points: 90-100% A 80-89 B 70-79 c 60-69 D Attendance: Attendance is expected. You will lose 5 points for each absence after the first one. Extra help: If you need additional help, please see me immediately. I will be happy to work with you individually or in a small group, but you have to let me know that you want the help. Schedule of Work: The schedule is tentative and may or may not prevail depending upon the circumstances of the class. You are responsible for knowing about changes made in the schedule. They will be announced in class.
