EIU FACULTY, STAFF WRITERS HONORED 
November 11, 1987 
CHARLESTON, IL.--More than 120 faculty members of the College of Arts 
and Sciences who have published books, magazines, and other writings during 
the past three years were recently honored at a reception given by Jon Laible, 
Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. 
A giant display of the various publications by the EIU staff members 
was a highlight of the special recognition. 
"The publications represent many thousands of hours of work in research 
and creation by a large number of our 300 faculty members," praised Dr. Laible. 
"Even more amazing than the number of writers," he added, "is the variety 
of materials, ranging from textbooks to specialized books and articles."

ADD 1/1/1/1 WRITERS HONORED 
Also honored was Dr. Paul Kirby, Associate Dean of the College of Arts 
and Sciences, who will be retiring March 1, 1988. Dr. Kirby, currently 
on administrative leave, has recently published a book, "The Autobiography 
of Hercules." 
Dr. Kirby, who joined the EIU staff in 1964, served as an instructor 
in foreign languages before becoming an administrator. He taught for 22 
years in a variety of subjects at the junior high, senior high, and university 
levels. 
"Dr. Kirby will be remembered for his love for the Classics and his 
devotion to excellence," said Dr. Laible in his tribute. "He cared about 
students and had a close relationship with them." 
After receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh, 
Dr. Kirby did advanced study at the American School of Classical Studies 
in Athens, Greece. He also served in the United States Army as an information 
and education specialist. 
In nationwide competition in 1974 he was chosen to attend the Institute 
on Classical Humanities in the American Republic at the University of Idaho 
in a program sponsored by the American Philological Association. He was 
named to the board of Bicentennial Lecturers by a committee of the same 
organization. 
He has been active in a number of Classical organizations, including 
lifetime membership in the Classical Association of Great Britian.
