Bioterrorism – past and present

Abstract

Bioterorizam je oblik terorizma kod kojeg dolazi do namjernog ispuštanja virusa, bakterija, toksina i drugih štetnih agensa s namjerom da se izazove bolest ili smrt kod ljudi, životinja ili biljaka. Biološke agense moguće je pronaći u prirodi, no oni također mogu biti promijenjeni ili dizajnirani kako bi im se povećala patogenost, mogućnost širenja kroz populaciju ili kako bi postali rezistentni na antibiotike i cjepiva. Biološki agensi privlačni su teroristima zbog lakoće kojom ih se koristi, čuva i širi, te zato što lako uzrokuju paniku među stanovništvom, čak i ako nisu uspješni u napadu. Postoje različite kategorija agensa, neki su opasniji od drugih ili prikladniji za masovnu upotrebu, no ni jedan se ne smije podcijeniti. Potrebno je obratiti posebnu pozornost na područja genetičkog inženjeringa i genomike, te mogućnosti koje pružaju grupama i pojedincima koji ih žele upotrijebiti za zlo. Bioterorizam i biološko ratovanje nije nova ideja i ljudi su ih koristili kroz cijelu svoju povijest, no u današnjem vremenu pruža im se prilika za još veći razvoj i upotrebu.Bioterrorism is a form of terrorism in which deliberate release of viruses, bacteria, toxins or other harmful agents used to cause illness or death in people, animals, or plants occurs. These biological agents are usually found in nature, but they can be altered and engineered in order to increase their ability to cause disease, spread fast and easy throughout the population or to make them resistant to known medications. Biological agents are attractive to terrorist because of their ease of use, storage and dissemination, and they also cause panic amongst people even if the actual attack is not very successful. There are different types of agents; some are more fatal than others, or better suited for mass attacks, but none should be underestimated. Special attention should be directed towards genetic engineering and genomics, and possibilities that modern science gives to people who do not have best intentions. Bioterrorism and biological warfare is not a new idea, and it has been used throughout human history, but in these modern times it gains potential for development
