Background : Mahkota dewa fruits have been used to treat several diseases. Mahkota dewa contains active substance such as alkaloid, terpenoid, saponin, resin, lignan (polifenol), and flavonoid. Liver was functioned as toxic substance detoxication and the important excretion organ beside kidney. The objective of this study was to show the effect of Mahkota dewa fruit extract given in gradual doses on the liver histhological appearance of BALB/C mice.
Method : An experimental study with the post-test only control group design was carried out on experiment animal BALB/C mice, consisted of 25 male mice, devided into 5 groups. K was control group without treatment with mahkota dewa extract, whereas P was group treated with mahkota dewa extract 0,2 ml/day, 0,4 ml/day, 0,8 ml/day, 1,5 ml/day. After mices have been treated for 2 weeks then mices were killed and their livers were taken to be analyzed histhologically.
Results : Test in normal hepatocytes showed significant differences between K-P1, K-P2, K-P3, K-P4, P1-P3, P1-P4. Test in Parenchymatous degeneration showed significant differences between P1-P3, P1-P4. Test in hydropic degeneration showed significant differences between K-P1, K-P2, K-P3, K-P4, P1-P4, P2-P4, P3-P4. Test in hepatocellular necrotic showed significant differences between K-P1, K-P2, K-P3, K-P4, P1-P3, P1-P4, P2-P3, P2-P4, P3-P4.
Conclusion: There were differences of liver histological appearance of Balb/c mice in treated group were given mahkota dewa extract compare with control group. At giving mahkota dewa extract in high dose noted increase of the level damage hepatocytes of Balb/c mice.
