Introduction: Hypertension is one of the most important and common health problems in societies. Hypertension is often asymptomatic and can be simply treated. If HTN is not treated, it can result in serious morbidity and mortality.
Variety of drugs are available for treatment of HTN. This research was performed to evaluate the efficacy of some of these drugs on the hypertension. This may help to choose an appropriat medication for the treatment of hypertension stageII.
Materials & Methods: 150 patients with hypertension who were not under antihypertensive treatment and satisfied inclusion criteria were recruited. The subjects were randomly allocated into three groups and under went the treatment HTN using (Atenolol, Hydrochlorothiazid, Enalapril)
After three weeks blood pressure of patients was measured and results were analyzed using SPSS .
Results: Atenolol reduced systolic blood pressure by 16.1 percent, diastolic blood pressure by 10.5 percent and mean arterial blood pressure by 13.1 percent
Enalapril reduced systolic blood pressure by 17.4 percent, diastolic blood pressure by 11.5 percent and mean arterial blood pressure by 14.3 percent.
Hydrochlorothiazid reduced systolic blood pressure by 14.7 percent, diastolic blood pressure by 9.3 percent and mean arterial blood pressure by 11.8 percent.
Conclusion: Although the effects of Enalapril on systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial blood pressure were higher than the effects of Atenolol, the differences were not significant. The effects of Enalapril on systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial blood pressure were significantly higher than the effects of Hydrochlorothiazid
