Introduction :Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease of gastrointestinal tract. Although, determination of epidemiological characteristics and risk factors and clinical features and treatment, can lead to management of this disease, we therefore investigated demographic characteristics and diagnostic features of this disease in Ardabil province since 1999-2008.
Material & Methods : This is a case series and document-based study. Statistical society were all of patients with ulcerative colitis were been referred to Boo-ali and Imam Khomeini hospitals and researcher`s clinic since 1999-2008. Sample size was 100 patients. Statistical evaluation was performed using the statistical software package SPSS15.0 for windows.
Result : 105 patients with ulcerative colitis were investigated. 34patients (41.9%) were men and 61patients (58.1%) were women. Familial history in 103patients (98.09%) were negative and in 2 patients (1.9%) were positive.12patients (11.4%) had history of smoking. At extra intestinal findings, 2 patients (1.9%) were noted in sclerosing cholangitis and others, each one, were noted in one (1%) patient. At colonoscopy findings, recto sigmoid involvement (48.65%), rectal involvement (31.4%), left colitis (16.2%) and pan colitis (3.8%) was seen respectively. There was significant varied between patients and smocking (p<0.05).
Discussion : Intestinal pattern in Ardabil are different to those of other places of Iran and westerners that were recommended other researches
