Outcome after acute traumatic subdural and epidural hematomas in patient admitted in Fatemi hospital,Ardabil,Iran between: 1381-1385

Abstract

Introduction : The most common caused of mortality in individuals with head trauma, are epidural and subural hematomas. In the last three decades regarding improvements in saving patients, lives and post — op monitoring and intensive care, the therapeutic outcome has been improved dramatically. Our study examines factors affecting outcome of treatment in patients with epidural and subdural hematomas admitted to Fatemi hospital Ardabil, Iran. Methods & Materials : Patients records between March 2002- March 2006 in Fatemi hospital were extracted. Records belonged to patients with epidural and subdural hematomas. Log patient were found and their outcomes of treatment were followed. Results: 69 patients (63%) and 40 patients (37%) had epidural and subdural hematomas, respectively. Mean age was33. Mean GCS at the time of admission waslO. Mean number of hospitalization days in neurosurgery ward was 6 days. In ICU was 8 days. 92 patients (84%) were men and 17 patients (16%) were women. In 76 patients (70%) treatment autcome was desire (GOS: 1,2,3). In 33 patients(30%) treatment outcome was poor (GOS: 4,5). 23 (53%) patients with subdural hematomas decreased. Conclusion : Type of hematomic (epidural and subdural) (P<0.001), papillary light response (P<0.001), concurrent lesion in CT- Scan (P<0.001), Age (P0.01), duration of stay in ICU (P<.001) and GCS at the time (P<0.001) affected the treatment outcome while sex. and the cause of lesion did not affect the outcome
