P R I N T E R. In the course of its
life the Q.uanerly has~d particular
attention to the lit.erar'f arts, a policy
which will be continued. \Vith the
Spring, 1949. issue, however, we be-
gan to feature the pictorial arts. Our
"Guest Artist" section has been so
well recei,'ed that we are encouraged
to enlarge the field and probe into
other significant \<lIUe! of the South-
west.
KAnlEJtJNE SIMON'S essay on the re-
nowned El Paso bookmaker, Carl
Hertzog. is the first of a new series on
salient figures of our region in the
\"arious arts. Scheduled for early ap-
pearance are "Laura Gilpin: \Vestem
Photographer." by John Collier. Jr.,
and "An Exceptional Musician: Kurt
Frederick:' by Ernst Krenek.
Miss Simons, bom in Iowa and
graduate from Grinnell College and
Columbia Unh-cmty. teaches Engloo
and is Administrative Assistant in the
UNM Graduate School. Sbe has con-
tributed to several journals and was
Book. Review Editor of the NMQR
from 19,t~ to 1948. For lean she has
kept in touch witb Carl Hertzog, and
in her library one can see many of the
handsome books that he has de-
signed.
Hertzog's association with Tom
Lea. J~ Cisneros. and other illus-
trators has produced remarkable
books. In a letter from Mr. Henzog
to the Editor: "My strongest point is

tor. I seldom consider the type by it-

GUSTAVE BAUMANN is one of the origi-
naluCinco Pintores·· responsible for
the establishment of Santa Fe as an
imponant an CQlony. He has dis-
played his talents in various wa)"S. as
painter. engra,-er, illustrator, book-
maker, and producer of plays.
Born in Magdeburg. Gennany, in
1881. he came to the United States at
the age of ten and received his edu-
cation at the Art Institute of Chi-
cago and the Kunts Ge",'erke Schule
of Munich, He is represented in the
Metropolitan Museum. New York
Public Library, Boston Museum, Na·
tional Gallery of \Vashington, Chi-
cago An Institute. National Gallery
of Toronto and other collections. A
gold medal for engraving was award-
ed to him at the San Francisco Expo-
sition, 1915.
His Chips and Shavings. 1929, Fri-
joles Canyon Pictographs, 1939 (se-
lected as one of Fifty Books of the
Year), Sketch Booklet. 1949, and
other hand-press editions of an books
on hand-made paper, are notable
contributions to the graphic arts.
Though his main interest is in
" wood caning and wood panel paint-
ing, his searching mind has gone into
other unconyentional media such as
