Aircraft observations of hygroscopic and ice nuclei at a tropical station

Abstract

Analysis of the aircraft observations of large and giant hygroscopic nuclei, chloride particles, total aerosol and ice nuclei made in the summer monsoon season indicated the following. The chloride number increased with height while its mass decreased. The ice nuclei, by and large, increased with height. On the days with higher rainfall the size spectra of chloride particles were broader, bimodal and particles of radius more than 15 mu m were more. The total aerosol and ice nuclei were more on the days with higher rainfall
