Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht anhand von qualitativen Vergleichs- und Einzelfallstudien zu diversen Entwicklungsprojekten im Bereich „Kampf gegen FGM“ in Westafrika (besonders Mali) zwei Fragen nachzugehen: einerseits der Frage nach den möglichen Ursachen für das oftmalige Scheitern dieser Vorhaben und andererseits jener nach erfolgversprechenderen, alternativen Projektdesigns. Besonders letztere Frage wird aber nicht nur um ihrer selbst Willen behandelt, sondern sie wird gleichsam auch als praktischer Test für die sozial- und kulturanthropologischen Theorien soziokulturellen Wandels interpretiert. Dahinter steckt die Idee, dass durch das (ganze oder teilweise) Zuordnen der einzelnen EZA-Projekte zu den entsprechenden Theorien soziokulturellen Wandels, die Projektergebnisse (z.B. Erfolg, Misserfolg) als Gradmesser für die Gültigkeit der jeweils zugeordneten Theorien fungieren könnten.On the basis of qualitative comparative analyses and case studies of development projects combating female genital mutilation in western Africa (especially Mali) the present diploma thesis tries to answer the following two questions: First, the question regarding the reasons for the frequent failure of these attempts and second, the question regarding more promising, alternative project designs. Especially the latter question will not be dealt with only for its own sake, but it will be interpreted also as a practical test for more general social and cultural anthropological theories of sociocultural change. This research design is based on the assumption, that by (partial or full) matching of the development projects with the theories of sociocultural change, the project outcomes (e.g. success, failure) may function as indicators for the validity of the respective theories
