Is drought-induced forest dieback increasing?

Abstract

Recently it has been suggested that forest mortality has been increasing as a result of heat and drought stress. But it is not clear, if these observations are representative for forests globally or in Europe. We applied the dynamic global vegetation model LPJ-GUESS to compare simulated and observed drought (PDSI; AI) and mortality events in Europe(10°W-70°E; 35°N-79°N).

Presented at the COST Event on Climate Change and Forests in Sarajevo (BA), August 2014</p
