Abstract
Treatment
of readily available α′-hydroxyenones with
a catalytic amount of strong acid in refluxing toluene affords the
corresponding dihydrofuran-3(2<i>H</i>)-ones in excellent
yields via a formal 5-endo-trig cyclization
