En 1901 el Ateneo de Madrid realizó una encuesta sobre costumbres relativas a nacimiento, matrimonio y muerte, que fue cumplimentada por unas 300 localidades de todo el estado español. En este estudio se analizan las respuestas correspondientes a Álava, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa y Navarra (23 poblaciones o valles), en lo referente a la muerte. Se pone en relación este material con los datos históricos sobre funeración tradicional, precisamente en el momento en que ésta ha desaparecido como tal en sus elementos esenciales o está en trance de hacerlo. Materiale hau hiletamodu tradizionaletik jasotako datuekin erkatzen da, hain zuzen, ohitura horiek bere funtsezko elementuak galdu dituztenean edo galtzear daudenean. The survey was carried out in 300 places in the Spanish State. The study analises the results obtained in Alava, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Navarra (23 populations or valleys) regarding customs related to death.
