Impact of canopy openness on understory vegetation in beech forests

Abstract

Ovo istraživanje provedeno je na području parka Prirode Medvednica. Cilj istraživanja je bio ustanoviti utjecaj sklopa krošnji na prizemni sloj bukovih šuma, te testirati koliko je hemisfernih fotografija sklopa krošnji po plohi šumske vegetacije dovoljno za postizanje sličnih rezultata. Istraženo je ukupno sedam ploha u tri zajednice bukovih šuma. Na svakoj plohi je snimljeno devet hemisfernih fotografija sklopa krošnji na pravilnoj 3x3 mreži, popisan i analiziran floristički sastav te su uzeti uzorci zemlje radi mjerenja pH tla. Fotografije su analizirane pomoću programa Gap Light Analyzer te su dobiveni rezultati otvorenosti sklopa krošnji i indeksa lisne površine. Pozitivna korelacija otvorenosti sklopa krošnje i Ellenbergovih indeksa za svjetlost i broja vrsta na plohama je izostala. Povećanje otvorenosti sklopa krošnji odražavala se na povećano zakiseljavanje tla što je bio dominantniji čimbenik za razvoj prizemne flore od raspoloživog svjetla.This research was conducted in Medvednica Nature Park, with aim to determine impact of canopy openness on understory vegetation in beech forest and to test how many hemispherical photographs per plot is enough to obtain similar results. Overall seven plots in three beech forest associations were surveyed. Nine photographs across regular 3x3 grid were taken on each plot, present flora recorded and analysed, as well as soil samples taken for measuring soil acidity. Photographs were analyzed using Gap Light Analyzer software for obtaining canopy openness and leaf area index values. Results has show that there is no positive correlation between canopy openness and Ellenberg’s indexes for light and number of species. Increased canopy openness was followed with increase acidity that turned out to be much more important environmental factor for development of understory vegetation in these forests than the available light
