Butterflies and moths of Dugi otok

Abstract

The goal of this research was to make the first preliminary review of butterflies and moths of Dugi otok. For this purpose, a previous investigation of the published literature has been carried out and 161 species were found in the literature. In the spring of 2017 additional survey of the butterflies and moths of Dugi otok was carried out and resulted with 57 additional species records for the island. A list of butterflies and moths of Dugi otok which counts a total of 217 species was created. Butterflies of Dugi otok are well surveyed group judging by the finding of a large number of species previously known in literature and only two new species for the island, Ochlodes sylvanus (Esper, 1777) and Pararge aegeria (Linnaeus, 1758). Moths are far less surveyed group both on Dugi otok and on other Adriatic islands what was confirmed with the founding of 55 new species for this island in this research. The real number of species is probably far greater so further investigation is needed to determine their final number. Therefore this list is to be considered preliminary and it's purpose is to facilitate and stimulate further exploration of the Lepidoptera fauna of Dugi otok as well as of other Adriatic islands
