'It is a dangerous journey': A Tibetan experience of borders, border control and irregular migration

Abstract

This study explores the border crossing experience of 12 irregular Tibetan migrants as they crossed the border from Tibet through to Nepal and India. Through these experiences, this study offers an insight into an otherwise understudied border site and the way that the social, political and historical context has shaped the participants' experiences. The challenges faced by participants supports the need for ongoing research into the experiences of specific migrant populations at border zones that fall outside traditional sites of inquiry as a way to better understand the impact that borders, and border control can have on irregular migrants in particular
