Automation for improving public library services in Turkey

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to examine the Turkish public library system and discuss how to develop public library services using information technology. At the second chapter some indicators are given which the public libraries and public library services are effected by them. These are; annual increase rate of population, percentage of population by literacy, ratio of population by literacy and sex, ratio of illiteracy in different provinces, annual income and type of expenditure, number of book and serial titles published per year, public library statistics in Turkey and some other countries from the different parts of the world. The third chapter examines the Turkish public libraries under the titles of history, budget, library buildings and mobile libraries, staff, collection and user. Finally, at the fourth chapter public library automation, its advantages and proposed model of automation for the Turkish public libraries are discussed
