The Torrellano section (Late Miocene – Pliocene, Bajo Segura Basin): Stratigraphy and events retated to the Mediterranean Salinity Crisis

Abstract

La sección de Torrellano, en el sector norte de la Cuenca del Bajo Segura, exhibe cuatro sintemas (unidades limitadas por discontinuidades) que ilustran la historia del relleno de la cuenca y los eventos asociados a la Crisis de Salinidad del Messiniense. El sintema Tortoniense II (Formación Las Ventanas) marca el inicio de la sedimentación marina. El sintema Tortoniense – Messiniense I, (formaciones Torremendo y La Virgen), representa la fase pre-evaporítica en condiciones marinas. El sintema Messiniense II (unidad de Carbonatos Terminales) corresponde a la fase sin-evaporítica en un contexto lagunar. El sintema Plioceno (Formación Rojales) equivale a la fase post-evaporítica en condiciones costeras y marinas someras.The Torrellano section, in the northern sector of the Bajo Segura Basin, exhibits four synthems (unconcorfomity-bounded units) that illustrate the history of the basin's infill and the events associated with the Messinian Salinity Crisis. The Tortonian II synthem (Las Ventanas Formation) marks the beginning of marine sedimentation. The Tortonian - Messinian I synthem (Torremendo and La Virgen formations), represents the pre-evaporitic phase in deep to shallow marine conditions. The Messinian II synthem (Terminal Carbonates unit) corresponds to the syn-evaporitic phase in a lagoon context. The Pliocene synthem (Rojales Formation) is equivalent to the post-evaporitic phase, deposited in coastal to shallow marine conditions
