Flow visualization methods for vortical flow studies

Abstract

Several different flow visualization techniques are used to observe, both in air and in water, the features of well ordered streamwise vortices downstream of a slender axisymmetric cylinder with a slanted base. The visualization techniques used include surface skin friction visualization, helium bubble technique, and total pressure field representation (in air) and a tracer technique (in water). Results of the flow visualization of the body wake are presented along with examples of balance measurements and pressure measurements on the bas
