Family and property ties of land class of the Kingdom of Poland and of “lost lands” discussed on the example of the marriages of Rodryg Potocki and August Ostrowski with Niezabitowski’s sisters

Abstract

Despite the changes which took place in nineteenth-century societies, the elite still had a conservative worldview. The elite did not want to maintain relations with people outside the establishment. Consequently, partners for marriage were sought within the social stratum. Limited possibilities of getting to know a candidate for marriage in the Kingdom of Poland led to get married with people from outside the Kingdom of Poland. Examples of such relationships are the marriages of the Niezabitowski sisters, who came from “lost lands”, with the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Poland: Rodryg Potocki and August Ostrowski.Pomimo zmian jakie dokonywały się w XIX-wiecznych społeczeństwach, przedstawicieli elit nadal cechował konserwatywny światopogląd. Objawiał się on m.in. w niechęci do utrzymywania kontaktów z osobami spoza „towarzystwa”. Wskutek tego partnerów do zawarcia związku małżeńskiego poszukiwano w obrębie własnej warstwy. Ograniczone możliwości poznania kandydata/kandydatki do mariażu jedynie na terenie Królestwa Polskiego, a także rozproszenie majątków rodowych po ziemiach podzielonej Rzeczypospolitej, doprowadzały do zawierania związków ponadkordonowych, czego przykładem są małżeństwa, pochodzących z ziem zabranych, sióstr Niezabitowskich z Królewiakami: Rodrygiem hr. Potockim i Augustem hr. Ostrowskim
