Toward Cross-Cultural Research on Sport Motivation

Abstract

Culture is an important theme in a number of fields in sport psychology. One such area is sport motivation. This paper focuses on sport motivation, a field in which culture plays a particularly influential role. The authors clarify cultural differences and identify distinguishing Japanese features related to goal orientation and causal attribution, process of athletic ability acquisition, and life skills education. Based on these findings, an exploratory model or effective strategies for sport motivation are proposed. The authors also discuss ways to promote cross-cultural research in this field and future directions
