In communication, there are four skills of language namely, listening,
speaking, reading, and writing. Moreover, reading activity is supposed to be the skill
that is very standing out in the world of education. By reading, someone can get some
informations and knowledge that have not known before. The problem is if he/ she
has to learn English, he/ she absolutely will not understand to comprehend the
reading. To be competent in achievement in reading comprehension it needs
motivation in learning English and the habit of read.
The aims of the research in writing this thesis are to find out the data about
students’ motivation in learning English, to find out the students’ achievement in
reading comprehension, and to find out the correlation between students’ motivation
in learning English and their achievement in reading comprehension.
The formulation of the problem in writing this thesis is divided into four parts
namely, the identification of the problem, the limitation of the problem, the questions
of the research, and the aims of the research. In this case, the writer discuss about
students’ motivation in learning English and their achievement in reading
comprehension.
The method of the research in writing this thesis is using a quantitative
method. It means that the data, which are obtained from the field of the research, then
analyzed statistically by means of numbers by using Pearson’s correlation product.
The result of the test shows that the average score of the students’ motivation
in learning English was 67.66 and the average score of students’ achievement in
reading comprehension was 63.96. Both of these scores can be categorized as
“sufficient”. Meanwhile, the calculation by using Product Moment correlation by
Pearson, indicates the result of the correlation between students’ motivation in
learning English and their achievement in reading comprehension is 3.70. It means
that between X and Y variable there is sufficient correlation. In other words, there is a
significant and positive correlation of students’ motivation in learning English and
their achievement in reading comprehension at the first grade students of MTs At-
Taqwa Pasawahan
