E-mail: ggull@nki.hu143Induction of lipoxygenase activity in pepper leaves infected bytobamovirusesProceedings of the 7th Hungarian Congress on Plant Physiology, 2002S3-P02Infection of plants by phytopathogenic viruses often resultsin oxidative stress in the infected leaves, which leads toirreversible damage of cellular membranes (lipidperoxidation) and to the appearance of visible necroticdisease symptoms. The hypersensitive reaction (HR), therapid cell death at the pathogen entry sites is a characteristicfeature of incompatible plant-pathogen interactions. Lipo-xygenase enzymes (LOX, EC 1.13.11.12.) that catalyze theformation of hydroperoxy derivatives of polyunsaturatedfatty acids, were also shown to participate in HR. Thehydroperoxy fatty acids produced by LOX enzymes aredeleterious to membrane functions and their accumulationcan lead to necrotic damage. On the other hand, they are alsokey intermediates in the octadecanoid signalling pathway andin other important metabolic processes. In the present studythe induction of LOX activity was followed in near-isogenicpepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants. Cultivars containingthe L1, L3 or L4 resistance genes and a susceptible host (L+)were inoculated with tobamoviruses overcoming neither, one,two or all of the resistance genes. LOX activity was inducedin case of incompatible host-virus relationships (L1 - TMV /Fe, L3 - ToMV / Ob, L4 - ToMV / OB and L4 - PMMV), butno significant changes were observed in case of compatiblehost-virus interactions (L+ - TMV / Fe, L+ - ToMV / Ob, L1 -ToMV / Ob and L3 - PMMV). The increase of LOX activitycoincided with the appearance of visible local necroticlesions. The specific induction of LOX in the incompatibleplant-virus combinations suggested that LOX may be involv-ed in the development of resistance against tobamo-viruses.
