They capture only one year in the lives of a col lege community, and the mere paper the pictures are printed on undergoes far less aging as the years progress than the people who inhabit those pictures. Depending on the moment in time we happen to open them, yearbooks graphical ly remind us of what we were compared to what we a re , and the comparisons can evoke any number of emotions: laughter, nostalgia, fondness, regret, thankfulness, - the l ist goes on. Most of a l l , yearbooks remind us that the past can be remembered, but not re l ived. Hopefu l ly , this book w i l l be a record of happiness and pride for each of you; hopeful ly i t w i l l bring forth memories of a time of togetherness, of accomplishment, of growth of mind and spi r i t , of a col lege that helped you discover yourself and your place in the eternal scheme of things, of a year that was crucial - in the best sense -in the development of the person you have become. This book w i l l never be more compell ing to you than the first day you receive i t and leisurely page through i t , counting the number of times you were captured on f i lm in a variery of situations, savoring your graduation portrai t . Years later when your chi ldren or grandchildren haul i t out of some dusty a t t i c , be prepared for some fun - especially as you try to give them a logical explanation for the 1974 phenom-enon of "streaking." My greatest hope personally is that whenever this book is opened in the indef in i te future, you w i l l be impressed not so much by the fact that you have changed in the intervening years, but what kind of change has taken p lace , and what role Saint Francis Col lege played in focusing the direct ion of that change. If you are continuing to learn, to seek new chal lenges, to extend your devotion to God and the betterment of the lives of those around you , we hope that your undergraduate years wi th us w i l l have provided the basic impetus for the ongoing v i ta l i t y of your l i fe . That is our reason for being. It is also my personal hope that your senior year w i l l have proved to be a turning point in the history of Saint Francis Col lege. This was a year marked by the introduction of wide-ranging changes in curr icu lum, the addit ion of energet ic , forward- looking people to the staff of the Col lege and the design of dist inct ive new major programs. In short, i t was a year when Saint Francis Col lege mapped a future for i tself that would ensure growth and progress whi le other colleges were experiencing a slow dec l ine , or even vanish-ing. The key to a l l of our changes was the challenge of meeting the needs of our students better. And you , the Class of 1974, played a v i ta l role in it a l l - both d i rect ly and indi rect ly . Your cooperat ion, understanding, and suggestions for improvement were invaluable in helping solve the problems that w ide -scale curr icular transition inevi tably brings. In student l i f e , you helped generate an enthusiasm, un i t y , and sense of personal responsibility to each other and the Col lege that might have seemed impossible when you were freshmen. We thank the Class of 1974 for that cont r ibut ion, and we shall never forget it. F ina l ly , the year was marked by the greatest personal tragedy I have ever known in the drowning of our son Bobby last Ju ly , yet it has also provided some of the greatest professional challenges and satisfac-tions I shall ever know. I hope that the past year w i l l ul t imately be one which is distinguished by the strength that results from having met uncommon challenges and overcome them - both for myself and for the Col lege. Horn President • - A-1 1 1 1 4 • I f J* A.* ^ ^ i ^ ^ X ^ 1 To the Saint Francis Community, As you view the contents of this book you will eventually discover the verse "Fantasy End" which we (the Motus Staff), have chosen to be the theme of the 1974 Motus. The short lived, four year career we have spent at St. Francis has now come to an end. With the termination of this stay, so ends the fantasy of the far removed world we have been existing in. We must admit that our view of the world from our small and usually happy environment, sometimes strays from reality. It is for this reason that the staff felt it appropriate to choose the verse we did. Casting our fantasies aside however, we must recognize the realities we have gained. The realities of friendships that will certainly not be forgotten and hopefully never be lost. The reality of the knowlege we have gained, not only in the academic world but about ourselves and others. But most of all, the reality of the confidence we have gained in ourselves as people who are able to achieve the goals we have set. These realities will hopefully lead us all to success one day. The Motus Staff used a good deal of their spare time putting together this account of the 1973-74 academic year. The entire group deserves a great amount of credit for putting their best effort forward and working together as a team. For this I can olny say thank you.
