Ulu Komering Traditional House

Abstract

The discussions of housing today had a tendency to follow western belief and way of life, and therefore tend to forget traditional values too, particularly on the urban people lived in the cities. Wooden traditional platform houses for example, were rarely found in the urban areas. Now we could only found traditional platform houses in the rural areas. And if only there were traditional platform houses in the urban areas, the traditional values within them were mostly vanished.Nowadays, good quality wooden material was hardly found and also expensive. But considering Indonesia geographical situation, building a platform houses actually was a great choice because these type of house could really survive world disasters. Ulu Komering House was one of many types of platform houses using wooden material in South Sumatera. Thus far, there were no literatures discussing Rumah Ulu Komering. Ulu Komering House was one of Indonesia’s local genius, particularly in South Sumatera. The absence of source material for Ulu Komering house had challenged the writer to do this research.Ulu Komering House hardly had decorative ornaments that distinguished it from other traditional houses. It was as a result of traditional values of Komering people. Ulu Komering House was the people response to their mountainous and marshy surrounding with big rivers that accustomed them to earthquakes and flood for years. Yet people in South Sumatera now still were building Ulu Komering houses, although the amount is decreasing
