December 17, 1951 EDITORIAL THE LAW OF HUMAN PROGRESS Recently the Container Corporation of America ran a full page advertisement tn Fortune, Time, Business Week and other leading periodicals. The text was a quotation from Henry George's "Progress and Poverty", written over 70 years ago, as follows: "The law of human progress, what is it but the moral law? Just as social adjustments promote Justice, just as they acknowledge the equality of right between man and man, just as they insure to each the perfect liberty which is bounded only by the equal liberty of every other, must civilization advance. Just as they fail in this, must advancing civilization come to a halt and recede." The advertiser might well have added the next succeeding sentence from the same book, which is as follows: "Political economy and social science cannot teach any lessons that are not embraced in the simple truths that were taught to poor fishermen and Jewish peasants by One who eighteen hundred years ago was crucified -the simple truths which, beneath the warpings of selfishness and the distortions of superstition, seem to underlie every religion that has ever striven to formulate the spiritual yearnings of man." RED MASS The colorful Red Mass to invoke Divine guidance for the Bench and Bar at the opening of the Fall Term was sung at 10 :00 A. M., September 16, 1951, at St. Patrick's Cathedral with our Honorary Law Alumnus, Francis Cardinal Spellman presiding. The attending judiciary was well represented by Law Alumni. Among them were Hon. John T. Loughran, L.'ll, Hon. Albert Conway, L.'ll, Hon. J. Vincent Keogh, L.'30, Hon. Edward J. McCullen, L.'27, Hon. James B. M. McNally, L.'20, and Hon. Gregory F. Noonan, L.'28. FATHER McGINLEY The Advocate's prize possession is a warm letter from Rev. Laurence J. McGinley, S.J., concluding as follows: "May the Advocate itself 'vivat, crescat, floreat' ". It is only by reason of our far-flung system of "listening-posts" that we are able to keep our much-in-demand President in focus. When he graced the dais of the Law Alumni's Annual Luncheon at the Hotel Commodore on March 3, 1951, he was introduced, as were all present, to Charles J. Flynn, L.'43, the alumnus who had travelled farthest to attend-having flown up from Argentina. Shortly thereafter Charley Flynn wrote the Advocate as follows: "Father McGinley arrived here from Chile * * * after his week's stay in Lima, Peru, at the Quarter-Centenary celebration at the University of San Marcos. He was met at the airport by James Grady, representing our new Ambassador, Ellsworth Bunker, Francis O'Grady, a North American long-time resident here, and myself. Ambassador Bunker had Father McGinley under the Embassy's wing. He gave a luncheon for him at the Embassy's residence attended by about 20 of the leading clergy and educators. The Ambassador very graciously said he was leading a conspiracy to have Father McGinley return to Argentina for a longer stay. Monday afternoon he called on the Papal Nuncio * * *" A further letter from Charley, dated September 14, 1951, says that, "There is still talk of Father McGinley's return visit here." In the meantime our beloved guide, philosopher and friend continues his many activities as President of Fordham. He has dedicated a new dormitory on the campus, greeted the Law School faculty at its first meeting of the year, awarded an honorary degree to Prime Minister Alcide de Gasperi of Italy, and presided at the annual Convocation of all the Faculties of the University. For you, too, Father, our prayer: Vivas. Crescas. Floreas. GODSPEED, GOOD NEIGHBOR! On September 15, 1951, New York University dedicated its new $5,000,000 Law Center on Washington Square. The same day it announced receipt of a grant of $1,000,000 by The Hayden Foundation toward a new residence hall for law students to cost $3,000,000 and to be known as Hayden Hall. This great good fortune couldn't have visited finer folk, and we extend to all concerned our sincere felicitations and our prayers for effective service to the legal profession. (over) COCKTAIL PARTY Edward B. Schulkind, L.'14 and his most worthy Special Events Committee are planning a Cocktail Party of the Law Alumni. The date, time and place will be shortly forthcoming. PUBLIC SERVICE Mayor Vincent Impelliteri, L.'24 duly returned from his trip to Italy and Israel, to his desk on "the campus of the Law School". Denis M. Hurley, L.'24 has succeeded John P. McGrath, L.'26 as Corporation Counsel of the City of New York. Another former Corporation Counsel, Charles F. Murphy, L.'23 graces the bench of the Supreme Court, Kings County, and still another, Dean Ignatius M. ·Wilkinson, L.'ll, functions as a member and Vice-Chairman of the State Crime Commission. Miles F. McDonald, L.'29 continues his hard-hitting duties as District Attorney of Kings County. Hon. Robert F. Mahoney, '23, L.'26, who served as a City Magistrate for eleven years, has been appointed to act as a City Magistrate during the absence of Magistrate Ringel. Many Fordham men were elected to public office in the last election. Our congratulations to the following: Hon. James S. Brown, L.'20 (Supreme Court, 2nd District) ; Hon. George A. Arkwright, L.'17 (Supreme Court, 2nd District) ; Hon Eugene G. Schulz, L.'28 (County Court, Bronx); Hon. James W. Feely, L.'26 (Municipal Court, Brooklyn, 6th District) ; Hon. Alfred J. Hoffman, L.'21 (County Court, Queens) ; Hon. John F. Scileppi, L.'25 (County Court, Queens); Hon. T. Vincent Quinn, L.'24 (District Attorney, Queens); Hon. Daniel E. Fitzpatrick, L.'24 (Municipal Court, Queens, 4th District); Hon. Edward Crawford, Jr., L.'45 (Mayor of Oswego, N. Y.) ; Hon. Sidney O. Simonson, L.'39 (District Attorney, Staten Island) , District Attorney Simonson has announced that on January 1, 1952 he will have four new Assistant District Attorneys, three of whom are graduates of Fordham Law School, viz. John A. Cosgrove, Frank S. Gannon and Kermit A. Casscells. INCIDENTAL INTELLIGENCE Professor Victor S. Kilkenny has been awarded Fordham's gold medal "Bene merente". Harold J. Jones, L.'26 has given us the pleasure of announcing that the Class of 1926 Morning Division recently held its 25th Anniversary Reunion Dinner Dance at the Hotel Delmonico at which over 100 persons attended. James Murray, Jr., L.'42 has been giving an informative series of broadcasts concerning civic affairs. The series is known as "The Jersey Side" and is heard over Station WFDR-FM, Fridays at 6 :30 P. M. Clem C. Ranson, L.'48, made a fine impression during a television discussion of "Probation" (NBC-TV, Channel 4, Sept. 13, 1951) in the chambers of Chief Justice Irving Ben Cooper, of the Court of Special Sessions. Osborne McKegney, L.'25, has beeen appointed Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Law Alumni. He has resigned as President of the Metropolitan Alumni Chapter of Gamma Eta Gamma.
